Thailand sport climbing: can you help?

Since an old friend told me about his climbing trips to Thailand it’s been one of my boxes-to-tick. Climbing by the beach and then relaxing in the blue seas sounds too good to be true. I’m about to find out - I’ve decided to do it later this year…

Haslam Released From Alstare Contract - Suzuki In Trouble In WSBK And MotoGP

The press release issued earlier today by the Alstare Suzuki team came as no surprise: Alstare boss Francis Batta merely formalized the news that the team had released Leon Haslam from the second year of his two-year contract that Haslam had with the Alstare squad. The reasons given were obvious: A lack of sponsorship combined with a lack of support from Suzuki's Hamamatsu headquarters, despite Haslam coming perilously close to securing the 2010 World Superbike title. The Englishman is now free to finalize the switch to BMW which has been so widely leaked.

Crowd favorite and Indy firefighter Lytle wins at UFC 119

INDIANAPOLIS -- Chris Lytle said all week that he wanted to put on a show for the fans in his hometown of Indianapolis. He delivered, winning a decision over Matt Serra at UFC 119, 30-27 on all three judges' cards. With the crowd chanting "Lytle," the two started out at the fight at a furious pace, with both fighters throwing bombs to start the fight. Lytle appeared to win the early exchanges, and just grew stronger headed into the second.Serra began to slow in the second round, which Lytle took advantage of. Lytle wobbled Serra on a few occasions, using his uppercut to do damage. This continued in the third round. With a beat-up face, Serra tried in vain for a takedown, but Lytle continued to hammer away. The two good friends embraced after the bout. Lytle asked the crowd in Indianapolis to cheer on his friend, and Serra admitted that he didn't execute a good game plan."What was I doing boxing with a boxing champion? What the hell's wrong with me?" Serra said after the fight."He could’ve just tried to take me down, but that’s about as ballsy as you can get," Lytle said. "I had plenty of respect for Matt beforehand but now it’s just so much more.”

Actor Kevin James will star as an MMA fighter in upcoming film

Kevin James is a big backer of the UFC and pals with Randy Couture. He's trained MMA in the past with Couture and several other stars of the game. Now he wants to bring more attention to the sport by bringing it to the silver screen. From The Wrap: Sony has announced that "Grown Ups" star Kevin James will re-team with the studio for an untitled movie set in the world of mixed martial arts.James will play a physics teacher whose school is facing drastic budget cuts. In order to earn money to save his best friend's job and the music program that his students hold dear, he moonlights as an MMA fighter, and ultimately winds up doing battle in the UFC.The video features Couture and James sparring back in 2006. "The Natural" is probably taking it easy on the big fella, but James doesn't look like a clown either. According to several reports on the Internet, James wrestled and played football in high school. The 45-year-old actor now appears to be around 5-foot-8, 250 pounds. So when he steps into the Octagon, which real fighter should he face?

UFC 119 Weigh-In Video

by Michael David SmithAll the fighters participating in UFC 119 on Saturday night will step on the scale at the weigh-in on Friday afternoon, and if you can't be there in person you can watch it live right here at MMAFighting.com.

In the main event, Frank Mir and Mirko Cro Cop should both be comfortably under the heavyweight limit of 265 pounds, but the weigh-in will be interesting nonetheless, as it will mark the first appearance of Mir since he said in the spring that he was making a point of losing weight. Mir, who weighed in at 265 for his last fight, will likely come in at less than 250 this time around.

The weigh-in begins at 3 PM ET and the video is below. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Bellator 30: Cancer survivor Baker wins; Makovsky and West make 135-title fight

Bryan Baker looked like he was dealt a possible death sentence back in April when he was diagnosed with chronic leukemia. The middleweight mixed martial artist kept the news a secret to almost everyone outside his inner circle. He's fought the disease galantly and showed similar moxie in taking out veteran fighter Jeremy Horn as part of Bellator 30 in Louisville, Ky. The leukemia is now in remission. The Baker-Horn fight was part of a Bellator card televised on FoxSports Net and held in an interesting setting, 4th Street Live, an outdoor entertainment district in the same town as the Kentucky Derby. Baker (pictured on left) showed he was a thoroughbred in spite of the terrible disease he's fighting. The 24-year-old had a tough time dealing with Horn's grappling in the first round but was able to keep the fight standing for most of the final two rounds and bust up Horn's face. Baker got a unanimous decision victory, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28. Bellator also has its bantamweight tournament final set after Ed West and Zach Makovsky cruised to victories. The 5-foot-9 West was simply too long for Jose Vega. Vega, a good wrestler, got the fight to the ground in the first and second, but was in defensive mode the entire time that he had top control. West worked for triangle chokes, multiple armbars, a rear-naked choke and an even a kimura. He never got the finish but he did land a nasty shot to start the second that split open Vega's left eyebrow. West got a split decision win, 29-28, 29-28 and 28-29. Makovsky was the shorter fighter in his battle against Bryan Goldsby but he had no such problems on the ground. He was active moving from position to position maintaining top control the majority of the time after landing one his nine takedowns. He rolled in the first two rounds and cruised to a unanimous decision win, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28. Makovsky (11-2) and West (15-4) will meet on Oct. 14 for the Bellator Season 3 Bantamweight tournament title fight in Kansas City at Bellator 32. Brit Jimmy Wallhead is scheduled to fight Ryan Thomas on that card.

The Althea Ducati combination Carlos Checa and Shane Byrne kicked off the Imola World Superbike round by controlling the top of the timesheets for most of the first session of free practice for the World Superbike class. Only a brief interruption by Kawasaki's Tom Sykes kept Checa and Byrne from dominating. Xerox Ducati's Michel Fabrizio made it a Ducati 1-2-3, while Ten Kate's Johnny Rea put his Hannspree Honda into 4th. The first blow in the title race was struck by Max Biaggi, who went 0.13 seconds faster than the only man who can stop him from winning his first WSBK crown, Leon Haslam. But with Biaggi in 9th and Haslam in 11th, both the Aprilia and Suzuki man have plenty of work to do.

Miller submits Pearson to kick off Ultimate Fight Night 22

Jiu-jitsu specialist Cole Miller won by a rear naked choke at Ultimate Fight Night 22 in Austin, Texas on Wednesday night. Miller beat Ross Pearson, a winner of "The Ultimate Fighter," at 1:49 in the second round.  Pearson proved difficult to take down early in the first. When Miller grabbed a leg for a takedown, he had a hard time pushing Pearson to the ground and keeping him there. With everything Miller threw, Pearson survived and usually countered. In the second round, Pearson came out swinging, knocking Miller to the ground, but Miller recovered quickly. He wobbled Pearson with a knee to the chest, then followed up with a series of punches. As soon as Pearson was on the ground, Miller jumped on his back, quickly secured a rear-naked choke, and forced Pearson to tap.  Miller said after the fight that he knew he wanted to finish.  "I see all these wrestlers, point-fighting strikers and lay and pray jiu-jitsu guys all trying to do the same thing, and they just control the clock. This ain't football," Miller said after the bout. Both Pearson and Miller are veterans of TUF. This is Miller's second win in a row. He defeated Dany Lauzon at UFC 108. Pearson suffered his first loss in the UFC after earning three wins in the Octagon.

UFC 119 on tap: Can Cro Cop fight with injured eye?

It's always something with Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. His ride with UFC has been tumultuous. Between confusion over reports that he was bailing on the organization after UFC 99 and a litany of prefight injuries, Cro Cop has been an adventure for the promotion. The latest drama will play out this week. Hopefully it's done by tomorrow or Wednesday. A Croatian report emerged last week that the main eventer at UFC 119 suffered an eye injury late in his training camp and may have to pull out of his fight against Frank Mir. Mirko Filipovic may have suffered a serious eye injury in his last training session before flying to Indianapolis. Sources close to the team claim the injury is of a serious nature and could put his UFC 119 with Frank Mir in jeopardy. Cro Cop has allegedly seen by a series of specialist and it's still unclear whether or not he will travel to the United States for the bout.UFC president Dana White went into damage control on Twitter saying Cro Cop was fine. Then Cro Cop threw more gas on the fire during this quick interview before he boarded a plane for Indianapolis. "What can I say? I'm leaving for Indianapolis, this is my 70th fight. That's a lot. I had bad luck in preparations," said Cro Cop. "At the last training, in the last minute, I got a pretty bad eye injury. But I think it will be alright. I have to suck it up. I didn't want to cancel the fight under any circumstances. I took this fight to do a favor to UFC. I wouldn't do that fight for anybody else than UFC."Cro Cop says he refuses to back out. "I am ready to take the risk but I can say you this, all the money in the world is not worth getting my eye injured but at this point there is no chance in hell to back up. Frank Mir is gonna be my toughest fight in my UFC career. It won't be easy." Beyond the eye injury, it doesn't sound like Cro Cop is coming into the fight in tip top shape. "It would be easier for me if I had time to do a full preparation cycle but at the end of the day that's my problem. I accepted the fight under these conditions," said Cro Cop. "I was on vacation when they called me and I just couldn't say no to them. Not because of the money but because of respect to the guys at UFC. They provided me with everything and I secured my life existence fighting for them. To be completely honest, the money was pretty decent and I can assure you that no one would decline that offer."Cro Cop further confirms the lack of a real training camp when he talked about his conditioning. "I will try to do my best, more as a routine fight, and if the fight goes to the third round it will be a handicap for me. But you know, that's life and nothing is ideal." Good for Cro Cop. He stepped up on short notice. He's been a tough dude during his stint with UFC. He took a beating at the hands of Junior Dos Santos and withstood the early pummeling by Pat Barry before emerging with a win. Will he stick it out with an eye injury against Mir? "Again I have to be honest, when you have 70 fights under your belt your priorities change. There is a fear of injuries but I assure I will give my best. I will most certainly go for a win but I think I did a lot just by accepting this fight. That's my opinion."

After a back and forth round, Mamalis picked up Massouh for a takedown, which turned out to be a mistake. Massouh jumped guard and grabbed a tight guillotine. Koscheck talks Holly Madison, villainy and Georges St. Pierre

When Josh Koscheck burst onto the MMA scene, he was an accomplished wrestler, but a raw fighter. A spot on the cast of the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter" changed all that. The unknown fighter has turned into one of the more successful and popular fighters to come from the reality show that helped build the UFC. Now, Koscheck is back on the set of TUF for its 12th season, debuting Wednesday night on Spike TV. This time, he's the coach, facing off with welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. He will face GSP in the cage on Dec. 11 at UFC 124.For Koscheck, the experience of returning to the show was surreal. "When I first went on TUF, I was just a wrestler. I had no idea how to fight. I had no training," Koscheck told Cagewriter. "Wrestling was my training. I was pretty much just focused on learning how to fight, and now here I am, six years later, fighting for the world championship."   That doesn't mean he was uncomfortable in front of the cameras."I love the spotlight. I love the power of television. It is the greatest tool in the world to get your news out there. The more you get on TV, the more you have TV following you, the more money that equates to, the more fame you have, and fame equals money."He doesn't even mind when the publicity is wrong. Earlier this year, a rumor spread that Koscheck was dating Playboy model Holly Madison."I like publicity. Whether it's good or bad. It's going to get people talking, it's going to put your name in the spotlight. I'm not dating Holly Madison. I never was. We're good friends. I'm not saying there's never a chance. We're good friends, but right now, I'm focused on winning fights and building a career rather than looking for a girlfriend.""Who's Dan Hardy?"Koscheck laughed off comments that fellow fighters Dan Hardy and Shinya Aoki had made about wrestling."Who's Dan Hardy? Let's be real. I don't know what they're saying, but if they want to do kickboxing, then they should go find a new profession. This is mixed martial arts. If you want to learn how to keep the fight standing and not be so boring and get taken down, then cry about getting taken down, go find a wrestling team and learn how to wrestle. Simple as that. If you don't want to get taken down and beat up, learn how to get up. Learn how to stop the takedowns."As a national champion for Edinboro University's wrestling team, Koscheck knows the value of the sport. "If people understood wrestling more and understood what it takes to compete at that level, they would give it more of a chance. There's thousands and thousands of young kids out there aspiring to be great wrestlers, they're having less and less chances of going to college because they're taking programs away.""Life would be boring if you didn't have controversy"Koscheck promises that he did his part in making TUF an interesting show."If this show is successful, it's probably not going to be because of Georges St. Pierre's personality," he said with a laugh.Koscheck knows he's seen as a heel. Though he genuinely is a nice guy in person, he says being a villain comes naturally."I didn't have to work on it. I've always been an ornery little [expletive]. I have a knack for getting under people's skin. I want to be an entertainer. I want to be the guy who makes money outside of the cage. If I've got to be the villain to do it, then I'll do that.  "Life would be boring if you didn't have controversy. This sport would be boring if you had guys who were just like a Georges, who looks like a robot, talks like a robot, and fights like a robot. You need guys out there with personality. There's not many guys who are out there who are willing to do that. I'm willing to do that.  "Georges St. Pierre was a better guy that day" He's now looking forward to fighting the "robotic" GSP. He lost the first chance at GSP in a unanimous decision at UFC 74, just two years into his fight career. Still, he won't make excuses."Regardless of [whether] it was too early or not, I had the opportunity to go in and win, and I didn't do that. I'm never going to make an excuse saying, it was too early. I was too young. Georges St. Pierre was a better guy that day. I know what I've got to do to make changes, and to take my second chance and come out with a victory. Come December 11, in Montreal, I have to find a way to win. I plan on doing that."Koscheck does not plan on resting on his laurels when facing GSP. "I want to keep this fight in position to win. I have to make sure my wrestling is up to par, because George is one of the best at disguising wrestling in MMA. He's fast. I have to be able to control the fight and put the fight in my position. I believe that my best chance is to keep the fight on my feet and knock Georges out."Koscheck believes that he's in the better position to win since GSP will have more pressure on him, fighting in front of a home crowd and defending the belt. "He's already beat me once. I have no pressure to go into Montreal and win this belt. He's the guy who's the champ. I'm the underdog. I like being the underdog. I like that I get to bet money on myself, which, I already have. I like that I get to hear a lot of 'F YOU KOSCHECK!' and a lot of boos." "I plan on pissing off 22,000 people on December 11." Check back Wednesday for more from Koscheck.

Three Stars from UFN 22: Oliveira, Foster and and Jim Miller

At Ultimate Fight Night 22 in Austin, the main event was odd, two "The Ultimate Fighter" winners lost, and these fighters stood out. No. 1 Star -- Charles Oliveira: The young up-and-comer took another huge step in the lightweight division with a late submission of TUF winner Efrain Escucdero. For that, he earned a $40,000 Submission of the Night bouns.No. 2 star -- Brian Foster: Foster TKOed Forrest Petz in just over a minute in the first fight of the night. He, too, picked up an extra $40,000, winning the Knockout of the Night bonus.No. 3 -- Jim Miller: He pulled out a tight decision over Gleison Tibau, earning his fifth win in a row. This win should help Miller move up in the very dense lightweight division.

Marquardt wins as Palhares complains of greasing

Don't ever stop fighting. Rousimar Palhares learned that lesson the hard way Wednesday night in the main event at Ultimate Fight Night 22. After a few minutes of feeling each other out, Palhares finally got Nate Marquardt where he wanted him, on the ground. But that's where things got wacky. Palhares tried to slap on a heel hook and Marquardt escaped with ease. The Brazilian then motioned to his corner that Marquardt's ankle was slippery. One problem though: The fight was still going on. Marquardt smashed Palhares with a right that hurt him and then landed several more shots as Palhares turtled up. The fight was stopped at 3:28 of the first and Marquardt walked away with a bizarre win in Austin, Texas. UFC analyst Joe Rogan pointed out that Palhares was complaining that Marquardt may have been greasing. Even though Marquardt fired off 18 unanswered shots on the ground before the finish, Palhares had his wits about him, stood up quickly and immediately pointed at Marquardt's ankle. The winner told Palhares there was nothing on his legs and then addressed the issue in front of the crowd with Rogan. "They checked it before I fought," said Marquardt. "The thing is, I came out really warm because I wanted a good sweat. I wanted to be slippery."  For those unfamiliar with the term "greasing," it was on display front and center after UFC 94 where Marquardt's teammate, Georges St. Pierre, was accused by B.J. Penn of using some sort of slippery agent to give himself the advantage. The case labeled by the media as 'Grease-Gate' was actually heard by the Nevada Athletic Commission. However, the NAC elected not to move forward with a full-scale investigation. Palhares' actions were ill-advised. Whether his claim was legitimate, he should've kept fighting and addressed the issue between rounds. "I just saw an opportunity and jumped on it," said Marquardt. "We kind of ended up in that scramble position. And that wasn't part of the game plan and I saw the opportunity and went for it."   Marquardt (31-8, 9-3 UFC) picks up a solid win and gets himself back in the mix for a potential middleweight-title eliminator fight before the end of 2010. Shortly after the fight, UFC president Dana White Tweeted that Marquardt was checked by Texas officials and there were no signs of greasing.

Again? Now Cerrone is hoping Varner is 'first death in MMA'

With Frank Mir nearly axed and getting pushed aside from his WEC announcing gig, you'd figure fellow Zuffa fighter Donald Cerrone got wind of the ramifications for wishing death upon an opponent. No Cerrone didn't spew his verbal garbage on terrestrial radio like Mir did, but he pretty much said the same thing that got the former UFC heavyweight champ in hot water with management when he lashed out at Jamie Varner. "... I hope my emotions have everything to do with this fight. I hope they come out and I’m just [expletive] fired up and all I want to do is go out there and kill him and that’s what going to get me going that first round, you know, I want to come in that first round and just rip his face off, you know that’s the plan," Cerrone told TapouT Radio(12:40 mark). "I don’t want to come in and sit back and let him dictate it, I hope my emotions drive me. So, I hope my emotions take over and I just kill this dude. I hope this is the first death in MMA."Cerrone meets Varner for the second time at WEC 50 later this month. Varner won the first battle at WEC 38 but the fight was ended when Cerrone delivered an illegal knee. Varner, up big on the scorecards, claimed he couldn't see and the fight was stopped in the fifth round. Varner is a quitter in Cerrone's mind. Referencing him as a "bitch" is where the interview started to go south for Cerrone. He uttered some less than stellar lines: "I just hope he shows up, I hope he just doesn’t throw himself [into a car out] in front of traffic before the fight so he doesn’t have to come.”"He’s going to call timeout or he’s going to look for a way out, he’s got the bitch gene, man, and when you have a bitch gene it don’t matter what you do you can’t fight and you’re either born with it and that’s who you are as a person and you can’t fix that, you know, and it’s going to come out." Trash talk is a way of life in the fight game but it seems too often that guys are ripping out the homophobic or anti-female material. There's plenty of ways to call someone a wimp without stooping to hateful levels. As far as, "the first death in MMA" line, Cerrone did apologize last night on Twitter. The guess here is that nothing will happen to Cerrone. It looks like UFC's flap with Mir probably went a little deeper than just his now infamous line on Pittsburgh radio. But fighters should take notice. Stop saying you want to kill your opponent. Quotes via Fight Opinion

With Okami on tap, Belfort staying the course

Chael Sonnen almost did what most thought was impossible. At UFC 117, Sonnen came within a minute of pulling off the upset over UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva. For that, he now gets an immediate rematch. But that also means Vitor Belfort's chance at Silva gets pushed back even further. It's par for the course for the snakebitten former UFC light heavyweight champ who was scheduled to face Silva several times at the start of 2009. First it was Silva that got injured (UFC 108 and 109), then Belfort suffered a shoulder injury (UFC 112) and now Sonnen has moved in front of him again. But the Brazilian, who is one of the more spiritual guys you'll find in MMA, knows his chance will come eventually."I've learned one thing in life. Everybody has a course. Everybody has a path," Belfort told Adam Hill from the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "I
know where I want to go, and I know I'm going to get there. I know what I have to do to get there. The obstacles
in the way, I don't choose. God knows, my job is to get through them."Belfort will get Yushin Okami next at UFC 122 in Germany. It's a huge fight for Okami, whose best UFC wins are over Mike Swick, Alan Belcher and Mark Munoz. If Belfort loses he tumbles way down the middleweight ladder. Even with a win, the earliest Belfort could probably face the winner of Silva-Sonnen (tenatively scheduled for Jan. or Feb. of 2011) would be May or June of 2011.  Belfort is going to mix things up while he trains around Las Vegas. Shawn Tompkins at TapouT Training Center is his head coach. He'll also be working at Xtreme Couture with boxing coach Gil Martinez and he'll drill jiu-jitsu with Robert Drysdale.Speaking of boxing, Belfort threw out a challenge for James Toney saying he'd like to face the boxer in the Octagon under boxing rules. Toney, desperate to cash another big check from the UFC, already accepted the challenge. That said, the chances of this happening are slim and none. Dana White doesn't seem too keen on working with Toney again and there's no way the promotion would officially go the freakshow route by holding special rules match.

Belfort off UFC 122, booked to face Silva

There's no such thing as a 24-hour news cycle in mixed martial arts. MMA Weekly reported last night that Vitor Belfort had to dump out of the Yushin Okami fight at UFC 122. It turns out that it wasn't an injury. Update: On Facebook, Belfort's trainer Shawn Tompkins indicated that Belfort is healthy. Maybe that means he was removed from the card and will be slotted in against Anderson Silva in February. Update II: UFC president Dana White just announced that Belfort is injury free and has been booked to fight Silva next.So there you have it, Belfort got moved out of a risky fight against Okami to ensure a matchup that White has wanted to see for a while.    Nate Marquardt, who is now fighting Okami at UFC 122, also deserves the fight. He's been skipped over several times for his rematch against Silva. He was destroyed by the UFC middleweight champ back at UFC 73. Since then he's been a much more confident, aggressive fighter. His trail to another title shot was derailed by Sonnen back at UFC 109. Marquardt got himself back in the mix with an easy win over Rousimar Palhares at Ultimate Fight Night 22. If he gets the job dome against Okami, then he'll face the winner of Belfort-Silva.More good news came across the MMA wire last night. The UFC discovered that its main event at UFC 119 this weekend won't turn into a circus. Because of an eye injury suffered late in his camp, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic was a possible late scratch for his fight against Frank Mir. No worries, Indiana did the right thing and had Cro Cop examined as soon as he arrived in the U.S. "'Cro Cop' suffered a poke in the eye in the last round of his final sparring session for the bout last week, but after a few days of rest, he is in tip top shape for this pivotal battle of heavyweight contenders," the UFC.com statement read. On Monday Andy Means, the director of the Indiana Gaming Commission's athletic division, (said Cro Cop) would undergo a pre-fight exam prior to Friday's weigh-ins. But apparently not wanting to risk a late surprise, officials arranged an exam as soon as Filipovic arrived in Indianapolis Facebook tip via Bloody Elbow

MotoGP Series To Return To Four Sessions At Estoril And Valencia

Organizing a MotoGP event at a brand new facility has given the series a chance to experiment, and the organizers seized that opportunity with both hands. Dorna and IRTA, in charge of the day-to-day practicalities of running an event, made two changes to the schedule at Aragon, reintroducing four practice sessions and moving the order that the classes were run in. Instead of three 1 hour sessions, Aragon saw the advent of four lots of 45 minute practice sessions, giving the same amount of time on the track, while allowing the teams a little more time to experiment.
The experiment has been an immediate success, and Dorna have just announced that it will continue at Estoril and Valencia, the last two MotoGP events of the season. There will once again be two free practice sessions on Friday, morning and afternoon, as well as a free practice session on Saturday morning, followed by qualifying in the afternoon. The return of FP3 has been universally welcomed by the riders, with the only complaint being that the qualifying is now too short. Valentino Rossi called for qualifying practice to be returned to 1 hour instead of 45 minutes, but the factories remain opposed to any further extension of practice.

Watch Joe Warren KO Joe Soto for Bellator featherweight title

As we wrote about last night, Joe Warren won the Bellator featherweight championship with a shocking comeback. Watch as Bellator commentator starts to say that he scored the first round 10-8 for Soto, then is interrupted by Warren's quick right to knock down Soto. With that, Warren won the Bellator featherweight title, proclaiming himself the "baddest man on the planet." In the space of a year and a half, he's moved from being a world champion wrestler to a champion fighter.

Mariusz Pudzianowski TKOs Butterbean at KSW 14

by Michael David Smith

Former World's Strongest Man Mariusz Pudzianowski beat up the 450-pound former boxer Eric "Butterbean" Esch Saturday in a freak show fight in Poland's KSW mixed martial arts organization.

Pudzianowski went for a takedown early in the first round and got Butterbean on his back, and from there he went straight into side control and just landed punches to Butterbean's enormous head until the referee stopped the fight. Butterbean looked like a fish out of water -- or a beached whale -- and really looked like he didn't feel like fighting at all. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Warren stages huge comeback to win Bellator featherweight title

Just when you thought Anderson Silva had a lock on the MMA comeback of the year for his win over Chael Sonnen, Joe Warren won the Bellator featherweight championship with an unbelievable comeback.  Returning Bellator champ Joe Soto dominated Warren in the first round, landing punch after punch. After all the shots that Warren took, there was no good reason for Warren to be standing. Soto taunted his Warren, moving his hands away from his face. Warren, a former world champion wrestler, couldn't get Soto to the ground. Warren tried for a spinning back kick, but after he slipped, Soto shook his finger at Warren. The tide changed in the second round, with Warren knocking Soto down with a big righ, following up with unanswered ground and pound, and then when they returned to their feet, Warren finished the fight off with a huge knee. The fight was stopped at 0:38 of the second round. The fight changed so quickly that Soto asked his corner, "What happened?"  "It was all about refocusing. You can't stop me. I'm the baddest man on the planet," Warren said.Bantamweight tournament semifinalists set Ed West moved onto the semifinals of Bellator's bantamweight tournament with a 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 unanimous decision over Bryan Goldsby. West kept the fight moving, attacking Goldsby's legs early in the fight. West was able to maneuver Goldsby into several submissions throughout the fight, but couldn't finish on any of them. Zach Makovsky won a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three judges cards, over Nick Mamalis. Makovsky outgrappled Mamalis, controlling him throughout the bout. "I expected an all-around war. After I won the first round, I realized how I could control the fight from on top," Makovsky said after the fight.Ulysses Gomez claimed the final bantamweight tournament spot with a split decision over Travis Reddinger. Gomez survived a late arm bar attempt from Reddinger to win the fight.  Jose Vega, West, Mavovsky and Gomez are the bantamweight semifinalists.

Whitehead fighting some serious allegations in Las Vegas

Mixed martial artists get pretty good attention from the local Las Vegas media but back in April, Mike Whitehead made the local news for all the wrong reasons. He was accused of sexual assault. The female accuser and a friend hit Whitehead's home for barbecue. The women asked to stay at Whitehead's home feeling like they had too much to drink. That's when the alleged trouble began:  The report said Whitehead told the women that they could sleep in his
bed. One of the women said she awoke to find her pants down and Whitehead having
sex with her in the bed. Although she repeatedly demanded that he stop, he
didn't for about three minutes, according to the police report. After the alleged incident, Whitehead sat in a chair in the bedroom, police
said. The second woman, who had been next to the woman on the bed, said she
witnessed the alleged assault, according to the police report. The second woman
alleged that Whitehead groped her during the incident, the report said.
Whitehead turned himself in to Las Vegas authorities where he was charged with sexual assault, attempted sexual assault and open and
gross lewdness. According to the Las Vegas Sun, Whitehead's day in court, a preliminary hearing, will take place on Sept. 28.The timing couldn't be worse for Whitehead, who's developed a good reputation as a Las Vegas-based trainer and training partner for some high level MMA fighters. The 29-year-old is still fighting as well. He's won 16-of-18 fights. His only two losses during the run came against former Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Muhammed Lawal and Babalu Sobral. Since the arrest and allegations, Whitehead fought again coming away with a win over another former UFC fighter Chase Gormley on July 10. Whitehead was a cast member on Season 2 of the UFC's "The Ultimate Fighter" but lost his only fight with the promotion against Keith Jardine at UFC 57.

West, Makovsky, Gomez Advance in Bellator Bantamweight Tournament

by Michael David SmithEd West, Zach Makovsky and Ulysses Gomez all won decisions Thursday night at Bellator 27 to advance to the semifinals of the Bellator Fighting Championships bantamweight tournament.

In the first fight of the televised card, West beat Bryan Goldsby by unanimous decision in a bout that will be remembered mostly for the fact that the fans at home couldn't watch it: For most of the fight the Fox Sports Net broadcast lost its video feed, and viewers saw only a graphic saying "Bellator 27 technical difficulties." The Fox Sports Net audio was still working, but the announcers didn't seem to realize that the viewers at home couldn't see the action, and therefore weren't as descriptive as they should have been. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Shark Fights 13: Jardine wants his stay in the minors to be quick

Keith Jardine was a gamer and a solid contributor to the UFC's rise over the last five years but when you've lost four straight and 5-of-6 you become a pretty tough sell. Jardine backed UFC into a corner and the promotion told the former cast member from Season 2 of "The Ultimate Fighter" that it was time to hit MMA's small circuit.  Jardine (15-8, 6-7 UFC) was flattered by all the offers from smaller promotions. He actually took one of the first fights that came his way. Shark Fights out of Texas offered up a fellow UFC veteran in Trevor Prangley. They meet this weekend in Amarillo, Tx. at Shark Fights 13. Jardine wasn't about to wait around for UFC to change its mind or take time off.  "First of all, all the offers that came in for fights were just incredible and made me feel pretty good. And I just wanted to get a fight as quick as possible, and then Shark Fights called right away - I mean, like, the next week - and I accepted the fight," Jardine told WJFK's Luke Thomas. "And so I've been in training mode ever since, so I think after this fight's over, I think I'm gonna take a couple weeks."Win or lose, Jardine is a free agent after the fight and he'll look for the best match possible. "The Dean of Mean" told WJFK that he believes the UFC would like him to win two fights before they call him back up. "My goal is always to get back in the UFC and get back in the title picture. And we made no bones about it," said Jardine. "We told 'em that that's what this fight is for me, a chance to get back in the ring and get out of the slump that I've been in, and get right back in the title picture in the UFC." Jardine, 34, is optimistic and he should be. He's well-regarded by UFC president Dana White and matchmaker Joe Silva. And frankly the last two years could've been much different with a break or two along the way. Jardine lost a tight decision to Quinton Jackson at UFC 96 and thinks his attack mode mentality down the stretch cost him the fight. He also got jobbed a bit in his last loss against Matt Hamill, when he lost a point on what was really an unintentional eye poke. Jardine revealed one surprising nugget that he never received offers or calls from two of the biggest promotions in the world, Strikeforce and DREAM.Prangley, who's truly a tweener between 185 and 205 pounds, won't be easy for Jardine. He's a very good wrestler and this will make the third straight takedown artist that Jardine has had to fend off. If he can keep it on the feet, Jardine should be able to get to Prangley (22-6, 2-2 UFC). The 38-year-old has slowed down defensively over the years. It'd be nice if Jardine could score a quick, emphatic finish as well. Bloodbaths are fine when you're in the UFC but probably not the best way get re-signed by the promotion.  Quotes via Bloody Elbow

Wait, how is he surviving that?" Henderson won the lightweight belt in a decision over Cerrone that was one of the best fights of 2009.-- Urijah Faber vs. Mike Brown II: Faber is one of the few fighters who became more legendary after a loss. Oliveira wins over Escudero with third-round tap at UFN 22

Charles Oliveira continued his comet-like trajectory with a third round submission of "The Ultimate Fighter" winner Efrain Escudero at Ultimate Fight Night 22.  In the first round, Oliveira seemed frustrated by Escudero's defense. Escudero held off a takedown and held Oliveira in the clinch. When the two finally went to the ground, Escudero ended up on top. Near the end of the round, Escudero finally threw some big elbows from the top.Oliveira continued to work for the takedown in the second round, but again, Escudero took Oliveira's back when the two hit the canvas. When they returned to their feet, Oliveira had the better stand-up. He was able to land leg kick after leg kick, without receiving many counters from Escudero. Both fighters were the recipients of groin shots early in the third round. Escudero walked his off, but it took Oliveira a while to recover. When the fight was restarted, Oliveira drove Escudero into the fence and then threw him down. Escudero reached for Oliveira's leg, which opened the door. Oliveira jumped on his back and sunk in a tight, standing rear naked choke, forcing a tap from Escudero at 2:25 into the third round.  Oliveira, a 20-year-old from Brazil, first turned heads at UFC Live on Versus 2, where he armbarred Darrin Elkins in just 0:41 seconds.

TUF 12 preview: Big names galore pitch 'The Heel v. The Hero'

Countdown to TUF 12UltimateFighter.comSee More:  TUF 12 • Georges St Pierre • Josh Koscheck • lightweights
You could see this storyline coming from a mile away. Josh Koscheck and Georges St. Pierre are the coaches for Season 12 of "The Ultimate Fighter" and battle lines have been drawn. Do you side with the brash, cocky dude or the humble, respectful one? In this preview video, the UFC brings on board some of its biggest stars like Randy Couture, Kenny FLorian, Matt Hughes, B.J. Penn and Jon Jones to talk about why they love the show. Other fighters like Dan Hardy, Ryan Bader and Chael Sonnen select which coach they think will do the best job. Bader likes Koscheck. Sonnen chooses GSP. Hardy goes one further saying if he were on Koscheck's team he'd ask to leave. It looks like another good season with plenty of heat and even an appearance by Mike Tyson!   TUF 12 debuts next Wednesday following Ultimate Fight Night 22 from Austin, Tx.

WSBK: Silly Season -- Smrz Signs with "New" Ducati Team

The Liberty CZ Group has simultaneously announced the formation of a new satellite Ducati team that will compete in the World Superbike series in 2011 and the signing of Czech Jakob Smrz to be it's rider for the next 2 years. Smrz, who was thought to have been on the shopping lists of a myriad of teams, has the reputation as a good qualifier that hasn't been able to back up his grid placements with consistent race results.
Liberty CZ Group's business interests include, fittingly enough, a chain of Italian food stores in the Czech Republic and Effenberg Beer, who is a partial sponsor of Smrz' current team, B&G Pata. The new team, "Liberty Racing", will reportedly be headquartered in Prague. Although the team is touted as all new, there are familiar faces behind the scenes, including Natale Egi, who managed the Sterilgarda Ducati team that fielded Max Biaggi and Ruben Xaus.

DirecTV Says Yes to Shine Fights, No to Shark Fights

by Michael David SmithLATE UPDATE: A day after this was published, DirecTV changed course and decided not to offer Shine Fights on pay-per-view.

We have a weird weekend in mixed martial arts ahead of us, with two different pay-per-view shows even as the UFC is sitting the weekend out. But if you're a DirecTV subscriber, you have only one fight card available to you: DirecTV is offering Friday night's Shine Fights event, but not Saturday night's Shark Fights show.

DirecTV has decided not to give its customers the chance to purchase the Shark Fights card, which is headlined by Keith Jardine vs. Trevor Prangley. Unsurprisingly, Shark Fights is disappointed. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
