Wrestling with the facts: Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez

UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and his opponent Cain Velasquez started their combat sports career on the same place: the wrestling mat. Both wrestled at the NCAA Division I level with storied programs. Lesnar wrestled at Minnesota during one of their best stretches, and Velasquez for Arizona State, a program that has been a factory for fighters.

What were their careers like?

Lesnar was a one-time champ, winning in overtime in 2000 over Iowa's Wes Hand. However, the close win over Hand -- a wrestler nowhere near Lesnar's size -- is not what Lesnar is remembered for among collegiate wrestling fans. In his junior year, Lesnar met Stephen Neal from Cal. State-Bakersfield in the finals. Both behemoths, they walked through the tournament, with few other wrestlers near their size. Lesnar lost the match 3-2. With that loss, he handed the team title to Minnesota's nemesis, Iowa. He graduated without winning a team title with the Golden Gophers. Neal went on to win the world title and then a successful career with the New England Patriots.

When Velasquez wrestled, he was considerably undersized. An All-American in 2005 and '06, Velasquez had a hard time getting by Minnesota's Cole Konrad -- now the Bellator heavyweight champion -- and Olympian and Iowa/Oklahoma State wrestler Steve Mocco. In both '05 and '06, Velasquez lost to the much-larger Konrad in the semifinals.

Velasquez's lack of a national title should not be mistaken for a lack of wrestling pedigree. When Velasquez was a heavyweight at ASU, the field was much tougher. His lack of size didn't keep him from winning 77 times in his career. He had a spark as a wrestler that made fans watch him, and it didn't take a genius to see that he was headed for something bigger.

Lesnar was memorable, too, because it was impossible to ignore someone of his size. He muscled his way to wins, pinning his way to the finals in 2000. However, technically strong wrestlers gave him trouble. Hand had beat Lesnar during a match earlier in the season, and Lesnar barely won in the finals.

Now, the two fighters with similar sports backgrounds will meet up for the UFC heavyweight title. Their wrestling prowess set them up for their careers as fighters, but we'll see on Saturday who can use their skills to win the belt.

Thanks to my friends at the Wrestling Talk for help with brackets.

Who was the drunken French kickboxing savant on TUF 12?

Josh Koscheck has brought in plenty of familiar names to assist his team on Season 12 of "The Ultimate Fighter" while Georges St. Pierre has surprised us each week. Wednesday night's episode took the cake when GSP introduced something called Jean Charles Skarbowsky. He was touted as a master of Muay Thai. But things got weird when St. Pierre, almost sounding fearful that Skarbowsky may go all Mel Gibson on one of the cast members, warned everyone about being respectful. From there, it only got more odd as they were told that Skarbowsky is drunk most of the time and only sleeps three hours a day.

At least he looked the part. Skarbowsky was sporting a good-sized beer belly, scrawny arms and was in need of some manscaping.

Skarbowsky was a topic during UFC.com's "TUF 12: The Aftermath". GSP confirmed that the drinking story was true (11:00 mark). Apparently Scarbowsky took a 14-hour flight from France to Las Vegas, got off the plane, went partying at The Rehab pool party at The Hard Rock and then came into the gym to work with the young guys.

"He reeked of vodka. I guess he mixes it with a little cranberry. I'm guessing it was a lot of vodka and a very little amount of cranberry," joked TUF 12 fighter Spencer Paige.

But Paige said working with JCS was no joke.

"From him, I got an insight into elite talent," said Paige.

With a little research, you'll find that he's a legitimate high-level Muay Thai fighter. Scarbowsky has over 100 pro fights with 80-plus wins. Good thing for Koscheck that Scarbowsky may have been battling a hangover when the UFC fighter tried to bust his chops. Kos could've learned the hard way to not judge a book by its cover.

In this video, a much-thinner and younger Scarbowsky is shown laying the lumber. Check out the 1:25 mark when he front kicks a dude into the ropes. GSP said he brought in Skarbowsky to teach his team about attitude and efficiency.

'The Reem' needs more respect, this song will help

Brock Lesnar can have his beard. And Fedor Emelianenko, you keep the sweaters. Those guys may have the biggest names amongst MMA heavyweights, but neither has an awesome tribute song like Alistair Overeem.

Excellent job on the vocals The Garv, we think. Whoever it is can certainly give the Bud Light mullet guy a run for his money.

Nicer Lesnar, no foil and football: What can UFC 121 do on PPV?

Brock Lesnar is no doubt the biggest draw in mixed martial arts. His last three fights have produced huge numbers on pay-per-view (1-1.7 million buys). But with Shane Carwin, Frank Mir and Randy Couture, he also had a guy across the way who had the chops to help promote the fight. Cain Velasquez isn't that guy. This is all on Lesnar, but this the new, more pleasant Lesnar. Is the big guy established enough with casual fans to once again push the PPV numbers in excess of one million?

It would be a shame if UFC 121 doesn't deliver a big audience. The card is stacked with fights for all types of fans. Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joined me to debate how 121 will perform.

Shane Carwin announces fight with Nelson via email to fans

The former UFC heavyweight contender announced his first fight after losing to Brock Lesnar at UFC 116. Shane Carwin sent an email to members of his fan community, announcing that he will fight Roy Nelson on New Year's Day.

I will be fighting Roy Nelson on 1-1-11 in Las Vegas Nevada.  The fight will be the Co-Main Event of the Edgar Maynard rematch.

I think Roy is a tough opponent for anyone. He has been in several main event situations and has fought a lot of veterans in the sport. I am honored to be fighting again and feel like Roy is a worth opponent.

My goal for the fight is to be exciting and go home with the win. I have a lot to prove as does Roy so this should make for a great fight.

Sending an email to fans is completely in line with Carwin's style. From the beginning of his career, he's been incredibly accessible to fans. His Twitter feed is filled with replies to his supporters.

UFC 125 is already shaping up to be an action-packed card. In addition to Carwin/Nelson and Edgar/Maynard, Clay Guida confirmed that he will fight Takanori Gomi.

UFC 121 Press Conference Video

by Michael David SmithTito Ortiz will be attending the UFC 121 press conference on Wednesday.UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, No. 1 contender Cain Velasquez, undercard fighters Jake Shields, Martin Kampmann, Matt Hamill and Tito Ortiz, along with UFC President Dana White, will all meet the media on Wednesday at the UFC 121 pre-fight press conference. And if you can't be there at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, you can watch it live right here at MMAFighting.com.

The press conference is open to the public, and it will be a good opportunity to see how the fans in Los Angeles react to Lesnar and Velasquez. Although Lesnar is the UFC's biggest draw, he's something of a villain to many fans. Velasquez, on the other hand, is a quiet, soft-spoken and likable guy who has been marketed heavily in Southern California by the UFC. So expect Velasquez to get the cheers from the crowd.

The press conference begins at 5 PM ET and the video is below.

Tito says he's healthy again, should we believe him?

Who's buying stock in the revitalized, healthy Tito Ortiz? It doesn't look like the UFC is just yet. Sure, he's on the card this week in Anaheim but he's not being heavily promoted. But can you blame the promotion for being cautious?

The UFC can't afford to promote another main event where Ortiz gasses and then claims he wasn't healthy for the fight.

Ortiz is saying all the same things he said before that less than pleasing battle against Forrest Griffin. From Sergio Non of USA Today:

[Ortiz said:] "I feel great, man. I haven't felt like this in a long time. It's been a good six, seven years since I felt the way I do now. The last time I felt like this was when I had my world title. [...]

"What I'm able to do now is wrestle every single day. We wrestle five days a week. [...] You're going to see at the weigh-ins how good of a shape I'm in. My weight's about 220 right now. Usually it's about 215, 212, so I'm able to really stay in great shape, and do the wrestling, and do the squats and lunges, and stuff that I couldn't do before because of my lower back. [...] Able to put weight on my shoulders and to press and to push and to push my weight forward."

Sergio Non wisely said, but we've heard this before. Why should we believe Tito this time?

[Said Ortiz:] "I told myself I would never take a fight like I did last year ever again. I promised myself I'd never do that, because I never want to give a guy an opportunity to beat me again."

Sold yet? This sounds too similar to the prefight banter before the Griffin match. He lost that one and then said he fought with major injuries and even had a scary incident of temporary paralysis during the training camp.

"I've got to kind of take care of my family. I didn't fight for 18 months, so bills had to be paid, so I had to fight," said Ortiz. "I got through a physical for the UFC and I fought with a fractured orbital bone and a ruptured disc in my neck. I took the fight anyways. I probably shouldn't have been doing it. I'm a great actor, thank God."

There's a lot on the line in this fight. The UFC is paying Ortiz pretty big money. How does it promote a former light heavyweight champ if he's not even competitive against a guy outside the top 10 in the weight class? Ortiz isn't worried and even talked about having five years left in his career.

"Over the last two years, just the challenges I've gone through, people would fold. Guys would quit. Guys would say, 'I'm done. That's it. I'm out." I'm not that type of person. I want to make sure these next five years I get the most out of it."

Let's hope he's healthy and most of the way back to his form of his 20s. A legitimately promotable Ortiz is good for the sport.

UFC 121 picks, Vegas-style: Velasquez looks to ruin 'Brocktober'

After UFC 100, Brock Lesnar was labeled an unstoppable force. Following a rough performance at UFC 116 against Shane Carwin, that kind of talk has died down. Was Lesnar overrated or is Carwin just that good? The next guy to put Lesnar's reputation to the test is Cain Velasquez. He's getting a lot of respect from bettors and fight insiders. Is he big enough to lock horns with Lesnar? Or will he wear out the monster?

Damon Martin from MMAWeekly and Larry Pepe from ProMMARadio joined me on RawVegas.tv to breakdown the big fights in Anaheim this weekend.

UFC 121 odds (Courtesy Lagasse Stadium Las Vegas):

Cain Velasquez (+120) v. Brock Lesnar (-150) - UFC heavyweight title

Soares and Aldo are patiently waiting for Edgar fight

Maybe Jose Aldo has outgrown the WEC. He's certainly on the verge of outgrowing the featherweight division. Much like boxers routinely graduate from the 147-pound boxing welterweight division to junior middleweight, the 24-year-old Aldo looks to have the size and skill to compete with the 155ers. But it doesn't sound like Aldo and his manager Ed Soares have any interest in calling out WEC champion Ben Henderson. It's time for bigger and better things in the UFC. Maybe that means a trip to the Octagon against UFC 155 champ Frank Edgar.

"To be honest with you, if you were to say, What would be your dream fight for [Aldo]? I think a dream fight for him, which I think would just be a fight that everyone would love to see, would be Frankie Edgar vs. Jose Aldo," Soares said told Versus.com's Ariel Helwani.

That's a nice step up considering Aldo's biggest WEC wins have come against UFC castoff Manny Gamburyan, Mike Brown and Urijah Faber, who is now fighting down at 135 pounds.

"That fight to me is the fight that everybody would want to see simply just because, not to disrespect anybody at the 155-pound division to think that Jose has the right to go up there without fighting in it, I just think that, as their styles, the way they match up, it would be one of the greatest fights of all-time, I think. It has the potential to be, just because of their styles," said Soares.

Thus far Aldo has been the good soldier, not complaining about a lack of pay-per-view dollars and exposure.

"He's a breath of fresh air, man. He's so refreshing. As a client, he's just very great," said Soares.

When he asks Aldo what he wants next, his answer may surprise some people.

"'It's not my job. My job is to go in there and perform inside the ring. That's your guys' job,'" said Soares relaying Aldo's thoughts.

Aldo certainly deserves the attention from casual fight fans that is already given to guys like Brock Lesnar, Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre. But Aldo and Soares aren't complaining. They trust the plan put in place by Zuffa.

"I hope soon," Soares said of Aldo's chances of becoming a consistent pay-per-view draw. "We have have faith in Dana (White), the UFC, Zuffa and the WEC, because we're not promoters. My job is to manage a fighter and the fighter's job is to go out there and fight, so I feel like I've done my job good, Jose has done his job good, and so far, the WEC and Zuffa have done their job well."

Before you nix an Edgar-Aldo fight, think about what's on the horizon for Edgar. If he gets by Gray Maynard at UFC 125, who's next?

Check out where the UFC fighter rank in the USA Today/Bloody Elbow lightweight Top 25. Who's the obvious choice?

1. Frank Edgar
2. B.J. Penn
4. Gray Maynard
7. Kenny Florian
9. George Sotiropoulos
10. Sean Sherk
11. Jim Miller
12. Evan Dunham
13. Takanori Gomi
16. Tyson Griffin
17. Joe Stevenson
18. Kurt Pellegrino
20. Diego Sanchez

White talked about "mind blowing" things on the way for WEC. Maybe Aldo versus Edgar is part of that plan. Or should Edgar be required to defend his title in a string of fights against guys like George Sotiropoulus, Sean Sherk, Evan Dunham and Takanori Gomi?

Diaz boxes his way to unanimous decision win, retains belt

After three years of bad blood, Nick Diaz settled his grudge with K.J. Noons and held onto the Strikeforce welterweight belt with a unanimous decision, 48-47, 49-47, 49-46.

Diaz ruled the first round, dropping Noons with a short right. Diaz continued to control the fight on the ground, and when the fight returned to standing, Noons had a hard time landing strikes because of Diaz's movement.

Early in the second, a cut opened over Diaz's eye because of a Noons punch landing just over the eye. Noons' striking picked up, as he landed several jabs throughout the round. The two also continued their trash-talking, seemingly getting angrier at each other as the round went on. He was also able to avoid Diaz's takedown attempts, and landed several body shots.

Noons' strong second round didn't seem to affect Diaz in the third, as his striking took the lead. As Noons nose bled, Diaz landed punches and kicks. He also confidently stuck his chin out, daring Noons to hit it.

In the fourth, Diaz turned to more knees to beat down Noons. It seemed as if Noons was tiring, but Diaz showed no signs of fatigue. Diaz landed beautiful strikes, and bloodied his opponent's face with several effective knees. Diaz also grew in confidence, shadowboxing right in front of Noons.

The final round was just as close as Noons tried to pull out the win. Both fighters threw several technically strong strikes. Every time Noons seemed to land anything, Diaz easily countered.

Despite the long history of bad blood between the fighters, Diaz and Noons embraced after the decision was read. There were no problems between camps, as has happened in the past between these two.

"The thing is, no offense, I beat this guy on the ground or standing up, and it's hard not to go for the takedown, but I beat this guy in a boxing match," Diaz said after the fight, as Noons nodded. He also said he isn't against the idea of fighting Noons again.

Strikeforce's heavyweight division looks great, but where are the fights?

The tough talk started back June. But nothing came of it. That's when Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker began to suggest the promotion wasn't going to be pushed around anymore by its biggest heavyweight star, Fedor Emelianenko. Fedor would be matched up against Alistair Overeem, where his management liked it or not. It looks like Fedor still wears the pants in the family. He's not fighting  in 2011. In fact, the matchmaking games spread to the entire Strikeforce heavyweight roster. It's impressive crew led by the champ Fabricio Werdum, Alistair Overeem, Fedor, Josh Barnett, Antonio Silva, Brett Rogers and Sergei Kharitonov, but they may all sidelined as far the promotion goes for the remainder of 2010. What gives? Coker again said, he's putting his foot down.

"... all those guys are all going to fight each other in 2011,” Coker told Sherdog's Beatdown Radio. "We’re not going to hold anything back. You’re going to see these guys fight the toughest guys because really, if you’re a heavyweight, there are no easy fights in Strikeforce."

Yet there are two fall cards and none of these elite big men are squaring off. The most glaring absence is Overeem. The Dutch muscleman had a tremendous amount of U.S. momentum on his side after smashing Rogers back in May and we haven't seen him since. That's unless you're an HDNet devotee and you love kickboxing. Overeem blocked out his entire fall calendar to take part in K-1's Final 16.

"It’s very clear in our agreement with Alistair that we have booking priority," Coker said of allowing Overeem to fight in K-1. "So we could have easily said no, but then is it really fair to him? It’s a personal goal of his. Let him go try to be the best standup fighter in the world. … we’re going to support him and we’re going to wish him well and hopefully he can win the whole tournament. Then he can come back the Strikeforce champion and the K-1 heavyweight champion. As far as accomplishments, I’ve never seen that done before."

That sounds great for the future of Strikeforce. The promotion must be very healthy if its in a position to allow its heavyweight champ to disappear from Showtime for nine-plus months. Overeem isn't the only big omission. Where is Fedor?

"He’s not going to be back this year because the schedule is already full." said Coker.

Really? It's full? Strikeforce has two solid cards to close the year but they're far from full.

Maybe we're all being impatient but it seems like Strikeforce is whiffing on an opportunity to show off what has turned into an intriguing heavyweight division. You take a look at the top five big men for both the UFC and Strikeforce and there's certainly a legitimate argument which promotion has the best.

Strikeforce - UFC (rankings according to USA Today/Bloody Elbow)
1. Fedor - Brock Lesnar
2. Werdum - Cain Velasquez
3. Overeem - Shane Carwin
4. Silva - Junior Dos Santos
5. Barnett - Frank Mir

Strikeforce: Tyron Woodley TKOs Andre Galvao

by Michael David SmithTyron Woodley knocks out Andre Galvao at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons 2.One of the best prospects in mixed martial arts got one of his best victories on Saturday night in San Jose, as former NCAA All-American wrestler Tyron Woodley dominated Andre Galvao, winning an easy first-round TKO victory.

Galvao went for an early takedown in the first round but Woodley made him pay for it, sprawling to avoid going down and landing several punches to the side of Galvao's head. That's pretty much all the fight consisted of: Galvao shooting for takedowns, Woodley hurting him with punches, and Galvao being unable to do anything about it until referee Josh Rosenthal stepped in and stopped it.

Thailand sport climbing: can you help?

Since an old friend told me about his climbing trips to Thailand it’s been one of my boxes-to-tick. Climbing by the beach and then relaxing in the blue seas sounds too good to be true. I’m about to find out - I’ve decided to do it later this year…

UFC 120 analysis with Iole: Will one of the Brits turn out to be a phony?

It's no shocker that UFC 120 in London features a British-heavy card. In fact, the top three fights to air on Spike television tomorrow night (8 p.m. ET/PT in the U.S.) have a Brit favored pretty heavily to win their fight. Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joined us to give his picks, analysis and thoughts on the fact that Michael Bisping, Dan Hardy or John Hathaway may be a little overhyped.

UFC 120 weigh-in (Courtesy MMAjunkie):

Carlos Condit (170) v. Dan Hardy (171)
John Hathaway (171) v. Mike Pyle (170)
Travis Browne (251) v. Cheick Kongo (228)
Claude Patrick (171) v. James Wilks (170)

What you need to know from episode 5 of "The Ultimate Fighter"

A UFC Hall-of-Famer, an elite welterweight and a drunk Muay Thai aficionado all stop by during this week's episode of "The Ultimate Fighter." All that, and weak pranks, too! Read on for spoilers and a recap of TUF.

Contemplative moment of the week: Koscheck is frustrated with his winless team, and you can't blame him. He's a fighter who is where he is because he took advantage of being on "The Ultimate Fighter," then moved to the elite of the UFC's welterweight division because he found a good team at American Kickboxing Academy. In both scenarios, he has been utterly coachable, listening to everything his coaches -- from Chuck Liddell to Bob Cook -- had to say. To light a fire under his fighters, he brings Jon Fitch in to work with his team.

Weak prank of the week: Alex "Bruce LeeRoy" Caceres continued pranking people, this time by putting bleach in Nam Pham's fabric softener, which Michael Johnson used. Is that even considered a prank, or just vandalism?

Crazy coach of the week: Koscheck is not the only one who brought in a new trainer this week. GSP brought in Muay Thai expert and "uh, what you call him, a free thinker" Jean Charles Skabowsky. Coach John Danaher told the team, "This is either going to be the best experience of your life or the worst." Skabowsky showed up wearing just Muay Thai shorts and beat the hell out of Team GSP while drunk. No, really.

Death threat of the week: Cody McKenzie, a Team GSP member, talked some smack to Koscheck as he walked out of practice. After Koscheck yelled, "You're not in Alaska any more!" McKenzie replied, "No, because if it was, I'd drown you." I'd need to check through the unified rules again, but I'm pretty sure drowning is not permissible in the Octagon.

Hall-of-Famer Cameo of the week: Yes, Fitch and the drunken Skabowsky were impressive, but Chuck Liddell trumped them all. The Iceman (and Koscheck's coach when he was on TUF) stopped in not long after he was knocked out by Rich Franklin at UFC 115. Still sporting a black eye from the fight, Liddell spends a few minutes talking with the fighters, telling them, "Don't forget to enjoy what you do. This is a hell of a lot better than a real job." He also says that it's hard to walk away from, saying that he was having fun even when he lost to Franklin.

Trash talk guessing game of the week -- Guess which fighter said:

1. I don't look like a martial artist or a fighter whatsoever.

2. I'm scared. That's the main feeling that's going through me.

3. A switch flips, and it's like, showtime.

4. I think to myself, maybe I should have listened to my Dad and become a businessman.

Bad attempt at humor for the week: Koscheck continued to try to get under GSP's skin, saying before the weigh-in,"If you kiss me now, I'll leave MMA," and other similarly dumb things. GSP says in the interview that it does bother him, but he doesn't let it show when sitting with his team.

Fight of the Week -- Spencer Paige vs. Nam Phan:

Round one: Sparring with the drunken Skabowsky paid off, because Paige landed kicks left and right, knocking Phan to the ground on a few leg kicks. Phan kept up with Paige by moving forward and matching each kick with a punch. With a minute and a half left in the round, Phan knocked Paige to the ground and followed up with ground and pound, then tried to finish him with a kimura. Paige didn't tap, and the round ended.

Round two: Phan started the round aggressively, landing strikes and shaking off a Paige takedown attempt. Paige jumped around the cage to avoid Phan's strikes. Phan wins, giving Team Kos their first win.

After the fight, Paige said that he hurt his hand somewhere in the fight. That explained why he was acting so oddly in the second round.

Team Kos acted completely gracefully in victory ... No, wait. They didn't. Koscheck pointed out to GSP how much fun the first win was. Then, they pounded on the wall of Paige's locker room. Classy.

Strikeforce: Josh Thomson Beats JZ Cavalcante

by Michael David SmithJosh Thomson and JZ CavalcanteJosh Thomson fought a tough, back-and-forth 15-minute battle with Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante at Saturday night's Strikeforce event and walked away with what will be a controversial unanimous decision in a fight that easily could have gone either way.

Thomson, who said afterward that he "fought like s**t," said he's hoping for a third fight with Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, with whom he's split two previous fights.

"Gilbert and I are good friends," Thomson said. "I'm looking forward to getting the title back. ... Everyone's waiting for the trilogy."

Dan Hardy: Taking on Greg Jackson's Fighters Gets Boring

by Michael David Smith
When Dan Hardy steps into the Octagon to fight Carlos Condit at UFC 120 on Sunday, he'll be facing his second straight opponent who has Greg Jackson in his corner. The last time the fight didn't go so well, and Hardy is concerned that it won't go so well this time, either.

That's not to say that Hardy, who's coming off a loss to UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre in March, is worried about losing to Condit -- he says he's confident that he'll win. But Hardy says he doesn't like the fighting style that Jackson teaches, and he believes Jackson-trained fighters exercise far too much caution in the cage.
