Antonio McKee Wins by First-Round TKO

by Michael David SmithAntonio McKee promised to shed the "boring" label on Friday night, and he delivered.

McKee, whose tendency to grind out decisions had turned him into the best fighter no one wanted to watch, needed just three minutes, 11 seconds to defeat Luciano Azevedo on Friday night's Maximum Fighting Championships card. McKee controlled Azevedo on the ground as he does to most of his opponents, but instead of lying on top of him, McKee kept striking and eventually delivered a brutal elbow to Azevedo's forehead, opening a huge cut and ending the fight.

"I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks," the 40-year-old McKee said after the fight. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

West, Makovsky, Gomez Advance in Bellator Bantamweight Tournament

by Michael David SmithEd West, Zach Makovsky and Ulysses Gomez all won decisions Thursday night at Bellator 27 to advance to the semifinals of the Bellator Fighting Championships bantamweight tournament.

In the first fight of the televised card, West beat Bryan Goldsby by unanimous decision in a bout that will be remembered mostly for the fact that the fans at home couldn't watch it: For most of the fight the Fox Sports Net broadcast lost its video feed, and viewers saw only a graphic saying "Bellator 27 technical difficulties." The Fox Sports Net audio was still working, but the announcers didn't seem to realize that the viewers at home couldn't see the action, and therefore weren't as descriptive as they should have been. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Josh Barnett Signs With Strikeforce

by Michael David SmithJosh Barnett, who over the past 14 months has slipped from No. 2 heavyweight in mixed martial arts to barely even relevant -- without even losing a fight -- has signed with Strikeforce in an attempt, at age 32, to get some meaningful fights while he still can.

"Strikeforce is the home of the best heavyweight division in the world and I'm proud to be able to call it my home now," Barnett said. "I'm looking forward to competing amongst the greatest fighters in the world and fighting my way to another world title." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
